The era of big luxury SUVs is upon us, with automotive companies competing to launch the most opulent vehicles in the market. Following the positive reception of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Innova HyCross, Toyota Kirloskar Motor is gearing up to introduce several new models, including an all-new sub-4-meter SUV based on the Fortuner and the Fronx.
Notably, Toyota is set to bring a new iteration of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, which is being manufactured at Maruti’s facility, with a market launch anticipated by 2025. This upcoming model is expected to rival the likes of Tata Safari, Hyundai Alcazar, and Kia Seltos.
Maruti’s Manufacturing Collaboration
The new 7-seater Urban Cruiser Hyryder SUV will be produced at Maruti’s manufacturing facility, which will also handle its sales. Toyota already supplies Maruti with the Grand Vitara and Hyryder, manufactured at Toyota’s Chennai-based facility.
This partnership highlights a significant collaboration between the two automotive giants, leveraging Maruti’s global C-platform to develop the new 7-seater Toyota SUV.
Engine Specifications of the New Toyota Hyryder
The new 7-seater model may feature the same robust hybrid powertrain found in the 5-seater Urban Cruiser Hyryder. This includes a Toyota-sourced 1.5-liter 3-cylinder NA petrol engine running on the Atkinson cycle, paired with a 78bhp-141Nm torque electric motor, linked to an E-CVT automatic gearbox that generates a maximum of 114bhp.
An alternative engine option includes a mild-hybrid unit comprising a 102bhp, 1.5-liter K15C NA petrol engine connected to an electric motor.
Transmission and Drive Configuration
The new Toyota Hyryder will offer a 5-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission, available in both front-wheel and all-wheel-drive configurations.
Given the potential limitations of these powertrains for a 3-row SUV, Toyota might also introduce a stronger 2.0-liter hybrid powertrain option, similar to the one powering the Innova HyCross.
Implications for the Luxury SUV Market
Toyota’s strategic move to launch a new 7-seater SUV in collaboration with Maruti’s manufacturing prowess signifies a bold step into the competitive luxury SUV segment. This venture not only strengthens the Toyota-Maruti partnership but also sets the stage for a compelling new option for SUV enthusiasts.
With advanced hybrid technology and a range of drive configurations, the upcoming Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is poised to make a significant impact against established competitors, offering consumers an enticing blend of luxury, performance, and environmental consciousness.
